coloredbookshelves’ reading survey!

Taken from kayleyhyde’s blog. Please fill it out & spread it around!
1. Favorite childhood book?
Harry Potter
2. What are you reading right now?
Across the Universe by Beth Revis and The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde.
3. What books do you have on request at the library?
I don’t have any on request at the moment.
4. Bad book habit?
Reading even four books at once. It’s terrible, because then it just takes me forever to finish all of them.
5. What do you currently have checked out at the library?
Oh, god. I have a terrible habit of not returning books to my school library because there are no fines.
The Brief and Wonderous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz..and probably a lot others. I need to gather them together.
6. Do you have an e-reader?
My mom and I sort of share a Kindle- she uses it a lot more then me though. I dislike purchasing ebooks because I can’t really justify paying $10 for a file, not a physical copy. The ebook online library is awful and horribly disorganized, so I only really use it for the free classics or when I can’t get a book. I did buy American Gods, hoping that the Kindle format will help me get through it’s length…
7. Do you prefer to read one book at a time, or several at once?
I would love to only read one book, but I’m often reading several.
8. Have your reading habits changed since starting a blog?
I feel like I’m reading a lot more this year, but not really due to starting a blog, as I haven’t really gotten it going yet.
9. Least favorite book you read this year (so far?)
Bumped by Megan McCafferty. It was so, so, so awful.
10. Favorite book you’ve read this year?
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.
11. How often do you read out of your comfort zone?
I’m trying to read more classics/more adult books.
I don’t really feel as though they are out of my comfort zone, as I feel perfectly comfortable reading them, but it’s just a sort-of challenge to myself. I am also reading graphic novels, which I had dismissed before. They’re great.
12. What is your reading comfort zone?
YA, realistic fiction, fairy-tale inspired.
13. Can you read on the bus?
I don’t take a bus!
14. Favorite place to read?
On the rocks at my cottage.
15. What is your policy on book lending?
One of the reasons I love to buy books is I love to share them with people (but I do like to get them back). But no one besides me is ever going get my personalized copy of The Fault in Our Stars! But I do have another copy of it that’s loaned to a friend right now, so no one will be deprived.
16. Do you ever dog-ear books?
I do, and I don’t really mind it. I am far too lazy for bookmarks.
17. Do you ever write in the margins of your books?
Sometimes, in paperback copies. I have in a paperback of LfA. Hilighted, too. I don’t really keep up with hilighting though.
18. Not even with text books?
Not unless it’s my own.
19. What is your favorite language to read in?
English, I guess? I would like to try reading in French one day.
20. What makes you love a book?
An engaging story that doesn’t let me stop reading, and if it makes me think a lot. Also the voice of the characters. That’s why I love tfios.
21. What will inspire you to recommend a book?
If I think my a friend will enjoy it, or if they’re looking for a particular genre/theme and I have an idea.
22. Favorite genre?
I love books based on fairytale stories and YA fiction.
23. Genre you rarely read (but wish you did?)
Historical fiction.
24. Favorite biography?
I can’t remember the last time I’ve read a biography.
25. Have you ever read a self-help book?
No.
26. Favorite cookbook?
I don’t cook.
27. Most inspirational book you’ve read this year (fiction or non-fiction)?
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
28. Favorite reading snack?
I don’t really snack while I read. I like a good juice or something though I guess.
29. Name a case in which hype ruined your reading experience.
Twilight, probably.
30. How often do you agree with critics about a book?
I don’t really follow critic reviews, but wether or not I agree would depend on the book and the content of the review, not the
31. How do you feel about giving bad/negative reviews?
I don’t feel bad. I read a book and if I don’t like it and people ask me about it, then I share what I don’t like. I feel if a book is put out there, it is open for criticism.
32. If you could read in a foreign language, which language would you choose?
French or Spanish.
33. Most intimidating book you’ve ever read?
Gone with the Wind in 7th grade, haha.
34. Most intimidating book you’re too nervous to begin?
Jane Austen novels. I know, I know.
35. Favorite Poet?
I do sound so uncultured when I say this, but I’m not a huge fan of poetry. I did a play about Dylan Thomas’ life, so I grew fond of his writing, but other than that, I generally stay away from poetry. I’m awful, I know. It’s just not a form of story-telling I enjoy.
36. How many books do you usually have checked out of the library at any given time?
6 or 7, as my school library, which is very good, doesn’t have fines.
37. How often have you returned book to the library unread?
Very, very often! Either I didn’t have time or didn’t like it.
38. Favorite fictional character?
I want to make a video about this, so maybe another time!
39. Favorite fictional villain?
Sauron and Voldemort.
40. Books you’re most likely to bring on vacation?
Something fun and somewhat light the Mortal Instruments books, Jessica Darling novels, Sarah Dessen or other fun YA. Or a re-read of I book I love.
41. The longest you’ve gone without reading.
Can’t recall, I’m almost always reading something.
42. Name a book that you could/would not finish.
I couldn’t finish the Narnia books when I was around eight years old. I got bored out of my mind in The Horse and his Boy.
43. What distracts you easily when you’re reading?
Once I’m into a story nothing really distracts me.
44. Favorite film adaptation of a novel?
Hugo, I Capture the Castle, Never Let Me Go, Coraline.
45. Most disappointing film adaptation?
I feel like Harry Potter films are somewhat disappointing. The Disney Peter Pan is downright awful, as well as the second Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Just, no. No no no.
46. The most money I’ve ever spent in the bookstore at one time?
Hmmm, probably around fifty dollars. I like shopping in used book stores, so often I can get 15 trade paperbacks for somewhere around thirteen dollars. I love used bookstores because I can buy a lot of books without spending too much.
47. How often do you skim a book before reading it?
I don’t usually.
48. What would cause you to stop reading a book half-way through?
If it was really slow and I was uninterested. I like to finish books when I start them, even if they’re bad.
49. Do you like to keep your books organized?
I organize them by color. I’m very visual, so I usually say things like, ‘Coraline is in the blacks.’ It’s sort of funny.
50. Do you prefer to keep books or give them away once you’ve read them?
Keep them but I lend them out. I have a lot of middle-grade books I will never read again but can’t get rid of.
51. Are there any books you’ve been avoiding?
Not really.
52. Name a book that made you angry.
I can’t really think of any. The Maximum Ride books just got worse and worse, but they’re all supposedly written by ‘James Patterson’, so what do you expect really.
53. A book you didn’t expect to like but did?
Books for school like The Misquito Coast and Animal Farm.
54. A book that you expected to like but didn’t?
Never Let Me Go.
55. Favorite guilt-free, pleasure reading?
All my reading is guilt free! I wouldn’t be ashamed about liking a book. If I like it, I like it, even if it is a book about teen princesses or called Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging.

Staying in bed undisturbed with a good book, and the phone off, on a radiantly sunny Saturday, without the slightest inclination to venture past the bedroom door until at least 9PM, is a privilege all bookworms earn, after so many childhood summers spent miserably ordered outside, scowling, against our will, for totally boring fresh air, when we didn’t even get to finish that last chapter.

The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a novel, must be intolerably stupid.
